Letter to TRIO students from Amie Jatta

Dear TRIO student,

I have been fortunate enough to be offered the position of Enrollment Coordinator for TRIO SSS Access. My goal in working with TRIO has been to grow and develop as much as I can personally and professionally. This new position provides me with that opportunity. Unfortunately, this means that I will not be working for the TRIO SSS Achieve program, and I will no longer be your Academic Advisor. Working with the Achieve program for the last five years has been a great journey, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. It has given me the opportunity to connect with each one of you individually, and watch your development as successful students.

As I’m transitioning into the new position, Marcial Garibay, will be your interim Academic Advisor. He has been with TRIO since the beginning (2011) and has done a great job working with Teacher Preparation students. He will serve as your advisor until the TRIO SSS Achieve Academic Advisor position is filled.

As always, my door is open. Stop by and say hi at any time.

Sincerely,

Amie Jatta, M.S. ED.

Barry Goldwater Scholarship for sophs and juniors

This academic year Sarah Orlofske will again be serving as the campus representative for the Barry Goldwater Scholarship. This is a national award and there is a competitive process for students to receive nominations from NEIU to compete nationally.

Eligibility is determined by the following criteria:
Full time matriculated sophomore or junior
RESEARCH career plans in Natural Science, Mathematics, Engineering (NO  MEDICAL Professions unless research focused, MD/PHD)  3.0 on 4.0 scale (or better)
Citizen or permanent resident.

This year there is a new application procedure and students MUST complete a Scholarship profile and pre-application (https://goldwater.scholarsapply.org/steps-in-process/) Our campus deadline for the pre-application is Dec. 2

If selected to proceed with the full application students will work on several essays including a research statement, similar to a grant proposal. Students already involved in research tend to have the most competitive applications, but previous research experience is not required.

The scholarship evaluates student abilities to become future leaders in their field and examines not only their academics, previous research, but clarity and commitment to their scientific research career goals.
Please contact Sarah A. Orlofske if you have any questions.

Early FAFSA Oktoberfest Events

Applying for financial aid is one of the most misunderstood—yet important— parts of being a college student. The Financial Aid Office at NEIU wants to alert you to one major change to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), that will help take away some of the mystery.  Beginning this fall:
  • Students will be able to apply for financial aid beginning Oct. 1—a full three months earlier than previously allowed.
  • Students will use income from two years prior when reporting personal and family income. This means that for both 2016-2017 AND 2017-2018 students and families will be using 2015 tax information on the FAFSA removing the burden of having to estimate income when the tax returns have not been filed.
  • Using older tax information makes it easier to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically import your tax information into your FAFSA on the Web.
