Spectrum Social Justice Retreat 2017

Date: Friday March 3, 2017 - Saturday March 4, 2017
Depart campus Friday at noon return Saturday 7:30 pm 
Location: Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center in Oregon, IL

Spectrum’s purpose is to facilitate dialogue focusing on building a foundation of knowledge that will enhance student success in leadership in the areas of multiculturalism and social justice. Students will participate in various activities, dialogues and journaling to help understand their identities and those of others.

Meals, Transportation, and Lodging will be provided.

Advocates in Disability Award could total $10,000


Seeking the next Disability Advocate Leader!!

The Advocates in Disability Award (ADA) program is to award and encourage young individuals (14-26) with a disability who are dedicated to positively affect the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families in the United States. The ADA is a joint program of The HSC Foundation and the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation. The selected recipient is awarded $3,000 in recognition of past disability advocacy and will receive up to an additional $7,000 in funding support for a proposed project to benefit the disability community.

On Tuesday, February 14th, the SCSE is offering its workshop on creating your Individual Professional Development Plan

Come and set one or more academic/career advancement goals for the coming year, such as improving studying skills, applying for internships, updating personal statements, doing informational interviews and/or learning about a career path.

National Internship Information Session 2/15



Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU) representatives from Washington, D.C., will be on NEIU campus Wednesday, February 15, 2016 from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm in B-159 (Pedroso Center)  

to answer questions about the National Internship Program for all majors. HACU offers paid internship opportunity to undergraduate or graduate students at accredited institutions in the U.S. seeking to graduate with career experience.

The HACU National Internship Program has been a premier student program for over 20 years, promoting diversity in the federal and corporate workforce. This informational session is being held in collaboration with the Career Development Center and the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity & Intercultural Affairs. All students, faculty and community are invited to attend.

MARC U-STAR Scholarship For Juniors and Seniors

 ​
​This scholarship is intended for junior or senior students with an interest in pursuing a Ph.D. in biomedical or behavioral sciences. 
 
Applications are due by March 1, 2017.
 
Recipients of the scholarship receive a $12,000 annual stipend for two years and all of their tuition, fees and health insurance are covered for that time, as well. 

Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and must complete a Mathematics minor as part of their training.

Priority Registration Begins Feb. 20

Priority Registration for Summer and Fall 2017 begins on February 20.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. students qualifying for priority registration will have the opportunity to register earlier than their scheduled date and time (which is based on student classification and hours earned).

SCSE Offers Three Internships

The SCSE is pleased to announce three upcoming research/internship opportunities especially for NEIU students: 1) Conversation with NEIU researchers about the SCSE summer research and professional development experience Tues, Feb 7 in BBH 247 3:00 – 4:00pm (see attached flier).  2) For Earth Science Majors: Alternative Spring Break (See below) and 3) National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates.

1) Research@NEIU

Meet in BBH 247 from 3:00 – 4:00pm on Tuesday Feb 7 to learn about summer research with NEIU faculty.

2) For Earth Science Majors: Alternative Spring Break.

A one-week live-away immersion experience at a national laboratory.  Spend your Spring Break with other NEIU students at a US Department of Agriculture lab!  Get to know top-level Agricultural Research Service scientists, and learn how they work to solve environmental problems like toxic Midwestern water contamination and the Gulf of Mexico “Dead Zone”.  Participants must be declared majors in Earth Science and eligible to work in the United States.  Get more information and download an application form. Application deadline:  February 13 2017


3) National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates: Water Resources and Quality in the Riviera Maya, Mexico

Looking for a summer research internship? Join us next summer while we investigate groundwater resources in the Yucatan Peninsula! This National Science Foundation funded research program is open to undergraduates with an interest in water science. Six students will take part in faculty-mentored research projects in Cancun, Mexico. Work with faculty from Northern Illinois University, Northeastern Illinois University (Dr. Voglesonger and Dr. Sanders from the Earth Science Department!), and Centro de Investigación Científica de Yucatán (CICY).

The 8-week program will be divided into three parts. Part one will be completed at the NIU campus in DeKalb, IL, where students will learn research skills, develop research plans, and study water resources and the Yucatan Peninsula. During this time students will be provided with accommodation at the residence halls on campus.
The second part of the program will take place in Cancun. For four weeks, students will work on their research projects with faculty mentors and Mexican scientists and undergraduates while staying in local housing. There will be a four-day vacation during which students will visit sites of historical and cultural significance in the Yucatan.
Students will return to NIU at the end of the program to analyze data and present their findings.
Research projects all examine the impact of tourism on the aquifers of this region of Mexico and include the following:

·       Groundwater Recharge

·       Groundwater Contamination and Public Health

·       Groundwater Geophysics

All travel and housing expenses are paid by the grant, as well as a student stipend of $4,000. For more information and application materials, visit http://www.niu.edu/ese/reu/

TRIO Seeks Student Worker

TRIO is looking for a student worker to scan and archive important documents for six to ten hours per week. Preference will be given to TRIO members eligible for Work Study. You must be enrolled in at least six semester hour to be eligible.
