COVID-19 Update: Higher Education
Emergency Relief Fund III
Recently, the U.S.
Department of Education announced a new distribution of $36 billion dollars in
higher education emergency relief funds under the American Rescue Plan. Of that
amount, approximately $9.8 million will be allocated to Northeastern Illinois University
students.
I am thrilled that the U.S. Department of Education also made it clear that
“all students who are or were enrolled in an institution of higher education
during the COVID-19 national emergency are eligible for emergency financial
grants from the HEERF” regardless of their immigration status, including DACA
recipients, other undocumented students, and international students.
Based on this announcement, portions of the HEERF III funds that NEIU received
will be distributed retroactively, as outlined below, to our undocumented and
international students based on the number of credit hours they enrolled in
during the Spring 2020 through Spring 2021 semesters.
Funding for undocumented and international students previously ineligible
for CARES and HEERF funding:
· Spring 2020: $42 per credit hour base rate
plus $15 per credit hour for students who completed the RISE Act application
· Summer 2020: $16 per credit hour base rate
plus $10 per credit hour for students who completed the RISE Act application
· Fall 2020: $47 per credit hour base rate plus
$18 per credit hour for students who completed the RISE Act application
· Spring 2021: $47 per credit hour base rate
plus $18 per credit hour for students who completed the RISE Act application
Further, all Title
IV-eligible students who attended Northeastern Illinois University during
the Summer 2021 semester will receive $52 per credit hour.
Additionally, Pell and RISE Act recipients who attended NEIU during the Summer 2021
semester will also receive an additional $20 per credit hour.
