NEIU celebrated the MLK National Day of Service and the National Day of Racial Healing this week. As such, it seems fitting to announce the George Floyd Social Justice Scholarship recipients for the fiscal year 2023.

Two recipients have been selected to receive $2,500 each:

●      Asha Brown (current undergraduate student, Sociology)

●      Prentice Hills (current undergraduate student, Social Work)

I am very proud to recognize Asha and Prentice for their courageous leadership and commitment to social justice.

Northeastern created the George Floyd Social Justice Scholarship in 2020 in response to the global call for social justice after a video surfaced capturing the brutal police murder of George Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old Black man in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Floyd’s murder marked a social tipping point in a series of police murders of unarmed Black people, from Ahmaud Arbery to Breonna Taylor, to the many others who never made the headlines. This scholarship honors the memory of George Floyd and invests in student leaders who are dedicated to advancing the collective work of social justice.

Please join me in congratulating Asha and Prentice. Special thanks to the selection committee: Michelle Morrow, Sharon Bethea, Rachel Burton, and DeWitt Scott.
