Max Graves Moody Spirit of Innovation Scholarship: $500

This scholarship is open to all Northeastern Illinois University students.

The Max Graves Moody Scholarship was created by a private donor in memory of her father, Captain Max Moody, who as a young man left the family farm, trained as a pilot with the Army Air Corps, served in World War II, and returned home to teach others how to fly at a time when aviation was coming of age. Max Moody was kind and smart, with a great sense of humor and a great love for family. He also loved flying and was dedicated to serving his country.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• A completed and signed application form
• An original 1-3 page typed (12-point font), double-spaced proposal addressing the following topic:

What would you use the scholarship funds for, and how would that reflect a spirit of innovation, imagination, risk-taking or idea generation?

The signed application and original proposal are due in the Office of Academic Affairs no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2018. If you have any questions, please contact Academic Affairs at acadaff@neiu.edu or (773) 442-5420.

Spring 2018 Education and Human Services Career Fair

The fair is sponsored by Northeastern's Student Counseling and Career Services. A wide range of organizations will be participating in this event, including employers in education, human services and other fields.

This career fair will provide opportunities for:

• First- and second-year students to learn about volunteer and part-time job opportunities where they can begin to explore their career options.
• Juniors to research internship opportunities with a wide range of education organizations, nonprofits, and social service and governmental agencies.
• Seniors to meet with employers looking to fill full-time positions in education, management, social services, health and marketing.
• All students to network among professionals.

Signup is not required for job seekers. Students are, however, strongly encouraged to be prepared. As many of you are aware, one of our ongoing challenges at Northeastern is helping students to understand the importance presenting themselves professionally when meeting with perspective employers. Given that, we would particularly appreciate your help in encouraging students to do their homework prior to the event. Below are some examples of steps students should consider so they can make the most of their career fair experience:

1. Attend one of the “Making the Most of a Career Fair” workshops that will be offered on March 7 from 4-5 p.m. and then repeated on March 8 from 3-4 p.m. The location for both workshops in B-119.
2. Make an appointment to meet with a career counselor by calling (773) 442-4650 to get assistance with designing a quality resume and preparing their 30-second introduction for employers.
3. Put together their career fair "look." Professional dress is highly recommended.
4. Research the employers who will be attending the Career Fair here.

Since 2011, Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) has hosted a community educational forum which is organized by NEIU faculty, educators, alumni, and community partners. For the 2018 forum, the People’s Education Movement planning committee hones in on the powerful vision of the youth and educators in our communities. The theme of this year’s forum is Claiming and Building Community Spaces: Then, NOW, & Next.

People's Education Movement Chicago is a collective of community educators, K-12 classroom teachers, students, parents and university professors committed to educational justice in K-20 classrooms using a decolonial and liberatory lens which advocates for the freedom of all people. As a movement rooted in the struggle against global white supremacy, we work in solidarity with the People's Education Movement Los Angeles, and the People's Education Movement Bay Area (California).

One of the common narratives in Chicago is centered on the demise of public entities and the need to fight for these contested spaces. As organizers committed to solidarity work we call to task the continued displacement of families through gentrification, displacement of students through public school closings, increasing rates of incarceration of youth through the unjust prison industrial complex, the dismantling of healthcare/selfcare services, nutritional accessibility and economic opportunities.

In light of these conditions, we, the People’s Education Movement, invite you to join us for a day of solidarity, organizing and action. This year’s theme signals an intentional decision to:

1. Acknowledge the power youth and educators have to reclaim, build and transform public and community spaces. 

2. Rethink the role and definition of an educator, highlighting the voice of The People/La Gente/Community Scholars/ Organic Intellectuals that are doing the work. 

3. Build sustainable networks across the city so we can make these basic needs accessible to all despite privatization efforts led by elected officials.

These intentions aim to sustain our organized efforts to challenge and resist policies that exploit our communities. And in an effort to build upon last year’s theme, Healing in Education, Resilience in Action, the forum will offer a healing space with community healers providing services to forum participants, provide a space to learn about alternative healing methods, and share tools of engagement that will support communities claiming and building spaces.

Funds Available For Education Majors!!

The Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education has provided TRIO Student Support Services with 25 vouchers (valued at $25.00 each) received from Pearson Education, the company which provides all the tests for the Illinois Licensure Testing system. The vouchers will only be awarded to TRIO students who plan on taking the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP). 

The vouchers expire September 15, 2018. 

To be considered, students must complete an application and meet the following requirements: 

1. Must have completed your Spring 2018 Student Success Plan
2. Meet at least once with your TRIO advisor or Peer Coach
3. Must be a TRIO student in good standing
