Advocate Health Care Seeks Volunteers

Advocate Health Care is recruiting undergraduate and graduate volunteers for its Transition Support Program, an initiative helping patients and families navigate the health care system.  The program offers significant experience working directly with patients, families, clinicians, and leaders to motivated undergraduate and graduate students pursuing health-related careers.  

We offer non-paid volunteer positions as Administrative Interns and Navigators at Advocate Christ Medical Center, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.  Our position descriptions are attached.

Lifeguard Certification Aug 11-14

There’s still time this summer to become a certified lifeguard, which could lead to employment opportunities for NEIU students!

Campus Recreation is offering the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course:
August 11, 12, 13 and 14:

• Saturday (8/11) and Sunday (8/12) 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Monday (8/13) and Tuesday (8/14) 5 p.m.-9 p.m.

Students will not leave the PE Complex for meals, so either bring a lunch and snacks or be prepared to order food.

Pre-Requisites:

Performed on the first day of class (students who do not perform pre-requisites may be ineligible to take the course):

 1) Swim 300 yards, a combination of front crawl (free style) or breast stroke (may use goggles) without stopping.

2) Tread water for 2 minutes, legs only.

3) Complete the following in 1 minute 40 seconds (no goggles):
Swim 20 yards, surface dive in 7-9 feet of water to retrieve a 10 pound weight from the bottom, swim head out of the water on one’s back with two hands holding the weight 20 yards to the starting position, place the weight on deck and get out of the water (not using stairs/ladder).

Classes will be both lecture/discussion and in-water strenuous activities. Students should come prepared to do both on each day of the course. To earn certification students must attend all hours of the classes, complete a physical skills test to the satisfaction of the instructor, and pass a written final exam.

We are offering two One Stop Enrollment Express events for the month of August:

Four $1,250 Scholarships Available!!

Thanks to a grant from the Max Goldenberg Foundation, NEIU will award four one-time scholarships of $1,250 to students who exemplify Mr. Goldenberg's commitment to service towards his fellow Chicagoans. 

 

Scholarships will be awarded to students who: 

 

1) have demonstrated a commitment to civic leadership and service activities focusing on finding solutions for challenges facing their communities both on and off campus; 

 

2) demonstrate academic achievement.

Students interested must:

• Write a personal statement outlining their commitment to and experience with service activities and civic leadership, including examples of their efforts to find solutions to challenges facing their communities
• Complete the application form available here
• Provide letters of reference from two individuals with the ability to speak to the nominee's prior service
• Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 at NEIU or another institution

Applications must be submitted online by Friday, July 27th, 2018, 11:59PM CST.

If you are a STEM major (math or science major), an education major, or a business major, you should NOT take Math 097.

Here are possible math pathways for students who take Math 097:
