Janice S. Jones Critical Need Teacher Scholarship

Introduction The American Association for Employment in Education (AAEE), an organization which promotes professional standards and practices in teacher preparation and job recruitment, recognizes a national shortage of candidates preparing for careers in certain teaching fields. This scholarship program is designed to address this need, providing a $1,000 award annually. The Janice S. Jones Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of Janice Jones, the 2002-2003 President of AAEE. In 2005, she received the Priscilla A. Scotlan Award for Distinguished Service; subsequently, she served as a consultant to the AAEE Board of Directors from 2005 until her death in 2007. Janice was a lifelong resident of Evanston, Illinois. Dedicated to the Evanston community, she began teaching Special Education. She taught for 14 years, with a two-year hiatus in Bermuda as an educator for the U.S. Department of Defense. Her final position, which she held for 18 years, was Director of Human Resources with Evanston Township High School District 202. She retired in 2004. An ardent proponent of quality education for all, she was well known for her lifelong advocacy of services for students with special needs. She was also recognized as an outstanding mentor for minority students studying to become teachers. Janice was a consummate professional who exemplified the values of AAEE. The scholarship fund that bears her name exists to carry on her tradition of excellence in education and leadership. Its goal is to support emerging educators who have demonstrated promise and commitment. Student Eligibility Candidates for this award will be enrolled in a teacher preparation program through an accredited institution of higher education and will continue in the Spring 2019 semester as full-time students. Only students from a college or university holding membership in AAEE are eligible to participate. This award is a one-time, non-renewable grant designed to assist in the career development of these promising teacher candidates in the identified critical need areas. Selection Criteria Students applying for the Critical Need Teacher Scholarship must be any student formally accepted in a "critical need area" as identified by the AAEE Executive Board based on "Supply and Demand" research (see list at bottom of page). Students will submit the application online and may be asked to provide additional information such as an essay and/or official transcripts. Candidates will be selected through a consideration of their academic success, service to college and/or community, and potential to achieve excellence as a teacher. Application Procedures Applications will be available through the AAEE website. Applications will be due by January 15, 2019. Scholarship Committee will make recommendations (including alternates) to the AAEE Executive Board. Recipients will be informed of their status and awarded monies during the Spring semester 2019. News about Math 092C and 173C

Dear Students,

I want to make you aware of two linked courses that are being offered during Spring 2019 called Math 092C and Math 173C. These are newer courses that the math department is offering for students who meet the following criteria:

(1) plan to take Math 092 in the spring AND
(2) are science, math, or business majors AND

(3) have the time, work-ethic, and determination to be successful in both courses.

Successfully completing Math 092C and Math 173C in the spring will allow you to complete your college algebra requirement in ONE semester. That is, instead of taking Math 092 in the spring and then taking Math 173 during a later semester, you can take both Math 092C and Math 173C courses in the spring. 

I encourage you to review additional information about Math 092C and 173C.

If you are interested in taking these courses in the spring please contact me as soon as possible. I want to make sure you have all the information that you need and that you feel these courses are the right fit for you.

It is critical that you register now if you are interested so that we can make sure the courses run in the spring!

Student Emergency Fund Now Available!!

Northeastern Illinois University is pleased to announce the creation of the Student Emergency Fund within the NEIU Foundation.

The Student Emergency Fund is a joint venture between the Divisions of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs and has been established by Vice President Daniel López Jr. and Acting Provost Wamucii Njogu. The fund assists Northeastern students by providing limited emergency financial support when they need assistance for essential expenses due to a temporary and unexpected hardship.

This resource will be able to provide assistance surrounding situations such as accidents, illness, death of a family member, fire damage or need for temporary housing. It is not intended to reimburse for expenses that have already been paid, or to replace or supplement existing financial aid. If Student Emergency Funds are granted, they do not have to be repaid.

OneUSDA Summer Internships: Apply by 1/18/19

Today, I am proud to announce that we are accepting applicants to our “OneUSDA Internship” opportunity for Summer 2019. Today’s students are the future of America and there are few things more American than agriculture. We’re aiming to find fresh talent, with diverse backgrounds, across all 50 states, to begin their careers as an intern with USDA

As part of the Federal Pathways Program, the OneUSDA Internship will provide students a way to explore serving their country through a career in government while gaining work experience in agriculture, natural resources, rural development, and other career fields.
