This is an Open House, so come early or later. We will have activities throughout the afternoon including, Navajo Sand Painting, Snowflake-making, and activities for kids of all ages.

Bringing a dish to share will be welcome, but not necessary. We want to share in your semester's accomplishments, and celebrate with you!

 

National Council on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE) This is an excellent opportunity to develop your leadership skills, network with other student scholars, and learn more about the issues of race and ethnicity in higher education. Contact your TRIO Advsor for assistance in applying for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

CORE^® Student Scholarship Program

KEY PROGRAM FEATURES:

• All NCORE^® Student Scholars will be required to complete the NCORE^® 2014 Student Scholars' On-Site Educational Program. This program has academic, community outreach, and networking components that require each student scholar to participate in and complete a sufficient number of sessions (at least 20 session hours) to earn a Student Scholar Certificate of Participation. 
• The student scholarship covers the registrations fee for selected recipients. Scholarship recipients and/or their institutions will be responsible for their own travel, hotel, and all other conference-related expenses.  
• Both undergraduate and graduate students will be given equal consideration.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Submit four (4) collated sets of the three items listed below:

1. A cover letter that specifically addresses the following items (A through D) below:

• A. Your academic interests and achievements 
• B. Your leadership interests and experience.
• C. Your reasons for wanting to attend and participate in NCORE . 
• D. Your commitment and availability to participate fully in the conference and the Student Scholar’s On-site Educational Program (outlined above).

2. A copy of your résumé.

3. Two letters of recommendation from faculty and/or staff at your institution. These letters must include both the two following elements:

• A stated commitment of institutional support for conference-related costs not covered by the scholarship or state that these costs will be covered by another source.The NCORE Student Scholarship covers the cost of registration only. 
• Affirm the students' commitment and availability to participate fully in the conference and the Student Scholars' On-site Educational Program (outlined above).

NOTE: In the selection process, scores for letters of recommendation that do not address items A and B will be penalized for their failure to do so.  It is the responsibility of scholarship applicants to communicate this effectively to those individuals they ask to write letters of recommendation.

The deadline for scholarship application submission is February 28, 2014*. Notification of awards will be made by March 31, 2014.  (*Postmarked by February 28, 2014)

USDA Internships. Act Now!

The U.S. Forest Service is preparing to advertise an agency-wide vacancy announcement for the student internship positions on USAJOBS next week, November 18^th.  As we understand it, the application period will be very short (5 days) closing on Friday, November 22, 2013.  As such, it will be imperative that students be prepared to react quickly and get their application submitted before the deadline.  Attached is a preliminary list of the intern positions that will be announced next week.

Students should begin:
·         Checking USAJOBS on November 18, 2013 for the announcement of available Internships within the US Forest Service.
·         Recognize that “NTE Intern” (Not to Exceed) are considered temporary appointments and is equivalent to the former Student Temporary Employment Program.“Indefinite Intern” is equivalent to the former Student Career Experience Program; offering indefinite appointments during their period of eligibility under the Internship Program. Although indefinite, noncompetitive conversion to a permanent or term position is not guaranteed.
·         Ensure all their application documents are already uploaded in USAJOBS (resume, transcript(s), letters of recommendation, and all other supporting documentation).  Click on the following link for more resume building guidancehttp://www.fs.usda.gov/main/r3/jobs/outreach·         Pay particular attention to the category job series.  For example, posting for all natural resources & biological services may be grouped in to a “499” series as opposed to breaking it out by major (i.e. wildlife sci., range mgt, botany, etc.)
·         Need to apply for positions that match their academic and career goals and choose what duty locations they’re willing to accept.  Note: there are over 700 work locations across the nation.  Again, students should be encouraged to be mobile, which will help increase their internship opportunities.
·         Attached are some Pathways documents that are helpful in understanding the program and the application process.
