House Subcommittee Boosts TRIO by $60 Million

The House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (“LHHS”) Appropriations Subcommittee unveiled its FY 2018 legislation. The bill, which proposes to fund the 2018-2019 program year, includes a 6% increase of $60 million for the Federal TRIO Programs. The legislation also includes a $10 million funding boost for the GEAR UP program. These increases are particularly remarkable given that the overall funding level for this LHHS bill is approximately $5 billion less than the LHHS bill in FY 2017.

While many steps remain in the final funding process for FY 2018, this funding increase is a victory that can be directly attributed to the fervent efforts of TRIO programs and students. Thank you for hard work and continued advocacy on behalf of low-income, first-generation students.
