The SCSE is pleased to announce three upcoming research/internship opportunities especially for NEIU students: 1) Conversation with NEIU researchers about the SCSE summer research and professional development experience Tues, Feb 7 in BBH 247 3:00 – 4:00pm (see attached flier). 2) For Earth Science Majors: Alternative Spring Break (See below) and 3) National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates.
1) Research@NEIU
Meet in BBH 247 from 3:00 – 4:00pm on Tuesday Feb 7 to learn about summer research with NEIU faculty.
2) For Earth Science Majors: Alternative Spring Break.
A one-week live-away immersion experience at a national laboratory. Spend your Spring Break with other NEIU students at a US Department of Agriculture lab! Get to know top-level Agricultural Research Service scientists, and learn how they work to solve environmental problems like toxic Midwestern water contamination and the Gulf of Mexico “Dead Zone”. Participants must be declared majors in Earth Science and eligible to work in the United States. Get more information and download an application form. Application deadline: February 13 2017
3) National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates: Water Resources and Quality in the Riviera Maya, Mexico
Looking for a summer research internship? Join us next summer while we investigate groundwater resources in the Yucatan Peninsula! This National Science Foundation funded research program is open to undergraduates with an interest in water science. Six students will take part in faculty-mentored research projects in Cancun, Mexico. Work with faculty from Northern Illinois University, Northeastern Illinois University (Dr. Voglesonger and Dr. Sanders from the Earth Science Department!), and Centro de Investigación Científica de Yucatán (CICY).
The 8-week program will be divided into three parts. Part one will be completed at the NIU campus in DeKalb, IL, where students will learn research skills, develop research plans, and study water resources and the Yucatan Peninsula. During this time students will be provided with accommodation at the residence halls on campus.
The second part of the program will take place in Cancun. For four weeks, students will work on their research projects with faculty mentors and Mexican scientists and undergraduates while staying in local housing. There will be a four-day vacation during which students will visit sites of historical and cultural significance in the Yucatan.
Students will return to NIU at the end of the program to analyze data and present their findings.
Research projects all examine the impact of tourism on the aquifers of this region of Mexico and include the following:
· Groundwater Recharge
· Groundwater Contamination and Public Health
· Groundwater Geophysics
All travel and housing expenses are paid by the grant, as well as a student stipend of $4,000. For more information and application materials, visit http://www.niu.edu/ese/reu/
You can also email Dr. Voglesonger at k-voglesonger@neiu.edu with any questions or if you want more information about the project.
Applications are due Feb. 15, 2017.
