RE: Fall 2018 Career Field Trip to BCDVideo
James Comer says “that no significant learning can occur without a significant relationship”. In order to have more connections, one must network and learn from one another. From our recent Computer Science Career Fair during Spring Semester 2018, we were approached by BCDVideo for program collaboration. BCDVideo is one of the Most Trusted Source for IP Video Surveillance Solutions located in Buffalo Grove, Illinois roughly 30 minutes away from NEIU’s Main Campus.
Goals:
My name is Kevin Gau and I am part of the CSS club on campus. I am writing to you today to present a proposal for a field trip for students to see if there is interest in the University Community for an offsite field trip to BCDVideo. The goal of this trip is help students have on site experiences to different locations in part of their selected major and course study.
For example, a student who will be studying Computer Science can take in part of incorporating what they have learned with computer organization, networking, concepts of operating systems, and more. Or a student who is studying business can examine the security side of business technologies and items to consider if one is placed in a position of understanding network security to protect their organization from threats.
Expectations:
With close communication with BCDVideo, the group has presented us with some possibilities. for students:
- Facility is available for field trips for students – see a tech lab
- We could speak during a class to discuss other opportunities within the technology field
- Our industry
- How we impact with what we do
- Future of our industry
- We would be interested in being part of a several speaker series with different organizations
- Participate in a round table or Q&A session
- We discussed how to assist with possible curriculum development if this became part of a course you were teaching. We realize it wouldn’t be an entire class, but might be another avenue for NEIU to offer?
The organization has also noted that they are very interested in partnering with the university. “That it is offering a tech curriculum that we could work with for our hiring needs. We do utilize IT grads for Level 1 Technicians and Sales.
We welcome everyone on this email to come and do a tour of our facility. We do have a state of the art tech lab and a training conference room large enough for 44 (with tables) and an additional 6 seats.”
Logistics:
This is a simple breakdown of how this trip will be laid out.
Timeline / Itinerary:
Date:
Friday, October 26, 2018 - Still working on Logistics
Transportation:
The local school I work with says they can provide NEIU an invoice for their contracted school bus provider. If the training center takes at least 44, a good turn out from students would at least 25 participants, 6 students from the high school (if the invoice requires it to be considered a high school trip), and leaving 13 seats for faculty and support staff.
Cost Breakdown:
The bus with a full amount of participants (40 ish) would pay roughly $10, broken down $5 for each way. BCDVideo, will provide refreshments or breakfast or lunch if requested..
Participants would be asked to pay for themselves; when the time comes, we will set up how we would handle cost logistics.
Why Your Organization:
The goal of any field trip is to help students grow and mature in their field of study. This is not limited to any one specific group of individuals. By taking a look at any organizations with a group can help spark a conversation.
Your Thoughts:
When possible, myself and other individuals be interested in hearing your thoughts about this field trip proposal. If successful, we can start the next stages in the planning process and also continue to look at other opportunities in various industries of study to help students engage in various career fields. From this, this can spark more student engagement, student development, internships and more!
