America Needs You Seeks Applicants For Fellows Program

Today is First-Generation College Celebration Day!

National First-Generation College Celebration Day honors the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965. In addition to creating federal grants and loan programs to help students finance their educations, HEA supported the launch of postsecondary access, retention, and completion programs for low-income, first-generation college students across the country.

Follow along on our instagram today as we celebrate our first-generation college Fellows, Mentor Coaches, and staff through our official #BecauseImFirst campaign.

"My career aspirations are to one day be able to become a correctional mental health counselor, or to work inside state or federal prisons to provide guided assistance for incarcerated individuals to integrate themselves back into society.

The ANY experience provides me with the confidence and knowledge to reach my future goals. Because I’m first... I can be successful. I can accomplish anything I put my thought and time into."

Brianna, ANY Fellow

If you know a first-generation college student who meets the qualifications of the Fellows Program and is ready to transform their future, nominate them today and send them our application. Questions? Contact applications@americaneedsyou.org.

TRIO SSS Programs Welcome Dr. Christina Matuschka

As the Executive Director of TRIO SSS programs, I'm pleased to introduce our newest staff member, Dr. Christina Matuschka.

Dr. Matuschka was born and raised in Chicago where she attended Chicago Public Schools. She was the first in her family to attend and graduate from college. NEIU is like her second home because she completed an undergraduate degree in Communication (2004), a graduate degree in Higher Education Leadership (2007), and has worked here in numerous roles. Her career in higher education started as a Graduate Assistant in Academic Advising in 2005, she went on to establish an Off Campus Program for SIUC, and then began a position in Teacher Preparation in 2011. Since then, she has taught in the First Year Experience program, completed a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Curriculum Studies at DePaul University, conducted research studies, and completed projects for the Goodwin Dean of Education. She’s happy to be working with future educators as the new TRIO Assistant Director of Teacher Preparation.
