Northeastern Illinois University's Land Acknowledgement and Action Committee and the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs invites our University and general public to join us in celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day from 5:30-7:00 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, 2024, on the Main Campus in the Pedroso Center, Room B 159.
This year's Indigenous Peoples Day speaker will be Paula Hopkins of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. In 1833, the Potawatomi signed the Treaty of Chicago, which outlined two square miles (Shab-eh-nay Reservation) in DeKalb County preserved for the tribe; this land was illegally sold around 1850. Paula will engage our campus community in conversation about the Shab-eh-nay Reservation land trust and the landmark decision from the U.S. Department of the Interior making Prairie Band the first federally recognized tribe in the state of Illinois.
A small meal will be provided at the start of the event from chef Carla Youngbear (Meskwaki/Potawatomi). Chef Carla will be cooking traditionally inspired stews and pairing them with her award-winning frybread.
