2025 Fred Hampton Scholarship

In honor of Fred Hampton, the late activist, organizer and Chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, Northeastern Illinois University has established the Fred Hampton Scholarship. The Fred Hampton Scholarship will award a student $1,000 to assist with costs associated with attending Northeastern, including tuition, books and fees. One scholarship will be available to a student for the Fall 2025 semester.

Scholarship Criteria

  • All applicants must be currently enrolled at Northeastern Illinois University and continuing their education at Northeastern during the Fall 2025 semester.
  • Scholarships are open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • The student cannot be a current Hope Chicago scholar. 
  • Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.0 or above.
  • Scholarship preference will be given to a male student who identifies as African American.
  • Applicants must submit a complete application (see below).

How to Apply

A complete application will include:

  • The completed application form with all information requested. 
  • A 1,500-word essay on the impact a scholarship like this can have on your educational journey.
    • Pro tip: Utilize University resources such as the Learning Success Center to review your essay before you submit your application.

Once the application submission period closes, the scholarship recipient will be selected and notified. The $1,000 award will be applied to the recipient’s account at the start of the Fall 2025 semester.

The deadline to apply for the Fred Hampton Scholarship is Friday, May 2, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CST. Please submit all completed applications to DeWitt Scott, Ph.D., at dt-scott@neiu.edu.
