The Parking Office is expanding its use of technology to address your parking needs.

 

Please remember that in addition to paying for parking, you must also register your vehicle online each semester. 

 

Registration for the virtual permit can be accessed via NEIUPort under the student tab. You may also access the link via the Parking Office webpage, which is also where you will find the most current information about parking. 

 

Students electing to opt out of parking for the Spring 2017 semester must waive their parking fee by January 23, 2017 with Student Payment Services.  

 

Questions regarding parking rules and regulations should be directed to the Parking Office located on the Northeast corner of the Parking Facility.

Summer Research at Field Museum

Eight undergraduate students are needed to participate in hands-on research in biodiversity science and receive training in cutting-edge techniques and analysis in evolutionary biology for 10 weeks during the summer of 2017 at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

Applications close February 10, 2017.

Students will learn research techniques that include DNA sequencing and computational analysis of genetic and genomic data, morphological measurements and phylogenetic analysis, and microbiology and next-generation microbial sequencing.  Scientific projects to be conducted by the students in 2017 include:

Forest Canopy Response to the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) Greenhouse Event
Evolution of Mitochondrial DNA in Ferns
Diversity in Mediterranean habitats - insights from lichenized fungi
Habitat-driven Morphological Syndromes in New Zealand Water Beetles
Systematics and Taxonomy of Cichlids in the Genus Thorichthys
Does diet influence the evolution of body size in ants?
Morphometric analysis of the elaborate soldier head in turtle ants
A Small World: Uncovering Hidden Diversity in Early Land Plants

In addition students will receive career mentoring in a diversity of STEM fields, gain experiences in public outreach and science communication, receive training in ethics/responsible conduct of research, and participate in a diversity workshop to help overcome bias in science.

Students will be provided a stipend, dormitory housing, and assistance with travel costs.

Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and an undergraduate during the entire period.  We especially encourage students from groups traditionally underrepresented in science to apply.

Math Development Students

• There will be tutoring in the Math Community Center for math development students (090, 091, and 092) BY APPOINTMENT ONLY throughout the semester
• Math development peer leaders assisting instructors in their classrooms will advertise one hour they will be available to tutor students each week on the MEWP website
• Students who want to attend tutoring in the center should email the peer leader they want to meet with and schedule an appointment with them in advance. We are doing this so peer leaders do not have to go to the center when no students attend. The peer leader emails will be listed at the link above (students should click on a peer leader's name to see their email address).

Federal Internship Opportunity

Internship application deadlines are quickly approaching. The Career Development Center, B-119, has information about federal internships and is eager to guide students to apply and qualify!

Currently, the U.S. Department of State, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Internship (CHCI) program is a paid opportunity in Washington D.C. for undergraduate students and open to ALL majors. The 2017 Summer Congressional Internship deadline is Friday, January 20, 2017. Want to apply?

Health Disparities Summer 2017 Internship

The Health Disparities Summer Internship is operated by Rush Center of Excellence on Disparities in HIV and Aging (CEDHA) with support from the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center (RADC). The program engages a select group of highly motivated high school and college students interested in health science careers to increase appreciation and exposure to health disparities research. This program is directed by Raj C. Shah, MD, a geriatrician, involved in leading community and professional education efforts of CEDHA and the RADC.

The program is designed to enable self-directed, experiential learning to develop skills such as health literacy, health communication, behavioral change, and research ethics to support progress in health disparities research. During the internship, each student will complete weekly journals about their personal experiences concerning issues of health disparities as they relate to the skills learned within the program. Students will also engage with community leaders and persons in underrepresented and underserved communities; as well as conduct and present their own individual research project which will be a piece of a larger group project focusing on health disparities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
 Strong interest in pursuing a career in the health sciences with a focus on health dispari-ties and research
 All majors are encouraged to apply
 Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to establish priorities and work independently as well as collaboratively
 Computer proficiency with Word, PowerPoint and Excel
 Ability to work accurately and efficiently under pressure
 Access to transportation
