Summer Stipend Grants Available

The National Endowment of the Humanities offers $6000 summer stipend grants for eligible individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Full-time faculty must be nominated by the university; all others who are eligible (non-tenure-track faculty, adjunct faculty, staff, retired faculty, and independent scholars) are exempt from the nomination process and may apply directly to the NEH.

To be considered for nomination, full-time faculty should submit their application to research@neiu.edu by September 8, 2019.

Part-time faculty and other interested parties who are exempt from nomination should contact Sharon Todd or Gala Pierce at ORSP@neiu.edu as soon as possible to facilitate their application submission to the NEH. The deadline for this year’s competition is September 25, 2019.

North River Commission Seeks Interns

The North River Commission is the nonprofit community and economic development corporation for the Northwest Side of Chicago that is seeking interns for the year. Founded in 1962 by concerned residents and neighborhood institutions (NEIU was one of the founders) NRC brings together over 100 civic associations, businesses, schools, institutions and places of worship. (full disclosure I sit on the Board of NRC)

Interns are able to work in any of the main program areas for NRC including  a) community development, b) economic development, c) planning, d) affordable housing, e) education, f) environment, and g) arts & culture.

Though these positions are unpaid they typically offer rich learning experiences. Students can serve as either a semester intern where they agree on a weekly
work schedule working with a staff lead or serve as a project intern where they work with a NRC staff member to establish a plan including duration and deliverables for that project. One of our recent alums in Justice Studies and Psychology was hired as a full time staff member at NRC in part because of the great work she did as an intern. Below are some brief descriptions for current intern positions

  • research ongoing and upcoming environmental initiatives that overlap with NRC’s mission and service area
  • assist with facilitating local volunteer stewardship and recreation opportunities

Intern Positions With Metropolitan Planning Council

With autumn fast approaching (!), The Metropolitan Planning Council is seeking applicants for our Fall and Winter 2019 Research Assistant, Marketing/Communications and Development Intern positions. These are generally unpaid positions with a strong preference for candidates with externally funded stipends, work-study funding or school credit/internship requirements. MPC will have two paid Research Assistant/Intern openings for Fall/Winter 2019.

We need candidates for these career-building opportunities:
  • Research assistants play an important role at MPC, offering essential support for our projects, working with staff on a daily basis, attending meetings, and learning about how urban planning policy works in the real world. We are seeking applicants who are talented writers, investigators, communicators, and/or GIS users. Fall and Winter RAs will support a range of research, advocacy and community-based projects listed on our website.
  • Our Development Intern will contribute to and receive exposure to a variety of projects associated with the front and back-end operations of a Development/fundraising department.
  • Our Marketing and Communications Intern will support MPC’s marketing, communications, community relations, and event coordination efforts.

The priority application deadline for all positions is August 23, 2019 but applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis before and after this deadline.
