2025 Fred Hampton Scholarship

In honor of Fred Hampton, the late activist, organizer and Chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, Northeastern Illinois University has established the Fred Hampton Scholarship. The Fred Hampton Scholarship will award a student $1,000 to assist with costs associated with attending Northeastern, including tuition, books and fees. One scholarship will be available to a student for the Fall 2025 semester. Scholarship Criteria

All applicants must be currently enrolled at Northeastern Illinois University and continuing their education at Northeastern during the Fall 2025 semester. Scholarships are open to both undergraduate and graduate students. The student cannot be a current Hope Chicago scholar.  Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.0 or above. Scholarship preference will be given to a male student who identifies as African American. Applicants must submit a complete application (see below).

The completed application form with all information requested.  A 1,500-word essay on the impact a scholarship like this can have on your educational journey. Pro tip: Utilize University resources such as the Learning Success Center to review your essay before you submit your application.

Once the application submission period closes, the scholarship recipient will be selected and notified. The $1,000 award will be applied to the recipient’s account at the start of the Fall 2025 semester. Murrell J. Higgins Duster Scholarship  Apply by Friday April 11 Students can apply for the Murrell J. Higgins Duster Scholarship now through Friday, April 11. This scholarship assists students with the costs associated with attending Northeastern, including tuition, books and fees. Scholarships are available to students for the Fall 2025 semester. Murrell J. Higgins Duster served in several key faculty, administrative and leadership roles in her more than 35 years at Northeastern Illinois University. She was the Founding Associate Vice President of the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs and Dean Academic Development. Upon her retirement in 2012, Dean Duster continued her legacy at NEIU by endowing a scholarship fund. Scholarship Criteria All applicants must be currently enrolled Northeastern Illinois University students. Scholarships are open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Donald P. Timm Scholarship Open To All GCOE Students With Financial Need

 Dear GCOE Student,

The Donald P. Timm Scholarship is now open to all GCOE students with financial need. Supported by a grant from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation Donald P. Timm Scholarship Fund, this award may cover tuition, books, fees, or other expenses for either the Spring '25 or Summer '25 term.

• Undergraduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, and be enrolled at least half-time (min 6 cr hrs in Spring, min 3 cr hrs in Summer)
• Graduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be enrolled at least half-time (min 5 cr hrs in Spring, min 3 cr hrs in Summer)

Please note that the recipients of the scholarship will be asked to sign the acceptance document, and to write a thank-you note. Additionally, the recipients should make every effort to attend the Scholar-Donor Soiree in late April 2025, or attend other stewardship activities as coordinated by the College or the NEIU Foundation.

There are no major changes in store for this application other than NEIU students being able to access FAFSA before it is open to the general population in December.  Of course you want to submit your FAFSA before everyone else, right? Indigenous Peoples Day celebration, Oct. 14

 

Northeastern Illinois University's Land Acknowledgement and Action Committee and the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs invites our University and general public to join us in celebration of  Indigenous Peoples Day from 5:30-7:00 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, 2024, on the Main Campus in the Pedroso Center, Room B 159.  This year's Indigenous Peoples Day speaker will be Paula Hopkins of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. In 1833, the Potawatomi signed the Treaty of Chicago, which outlined two square miles (Shab-eh-nay Reservation) in DeKalb County preserved for the tribe; this land was illegally sold around 1850. Paula will engage our campus community in conversation about the Shab-eh-nay Reservation land trust and the landmark decision from the U.S. Department of the Interior making Prairie Band the first federally recognized tribe in the state of Illinois.  A small meal will be provided at the start of the event from chef Carla Youngbear (Meskwaki/Potawatomi).
