Early FAFSA Oktoberfest Events

Applying for financial aid is one of the most misunderstood—yet important— parts of being a college student. The Financial Aid Office at NEIU wants to alert you to one major change to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), that will help take away some of the mystery.  Beginning this fall:
  • Students will be able to apply for financial aid beginning Oct. 1—a full three months earlier than previously allowed.
  • Students will use income from two years prior when reporting personal and family income. This means that for both 2016-2017 AND 2017-2018 students and families will be using 2015 tax information on the FAFSA removing the burden of having to estimate income when the tax returns have not been filed.
  • Using older tax information makes it easier to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically import your tax information into your FAFSA on the Web.
