Working toward a health profession career? Check out AHEC Scholars!!


AHEC Scholars is a program for health professions students interested in enhancing their education by gaining additional knowledge and experience in areas experiencing a shortage of health professionals. This program will give students opportunities to refine their career choices and learn how health professionals from different disciplines can work together. The program is being launched at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU), however any Chicago area students that fit the program requirements will be considered.
The AHEC Scholars program includes:
• Job shadowing opportunities
• Career coaching
• Networking opportunities
• One summer institute per year
• Immersion experiences in underserved communities
• Participation in a community service learning project
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students in a health career program.
  • Applicants must complete an application.
  • Applicants must be available to begin this program at the start of April 2019. The program is a two-year commitment and each year includes the following:
    • 40 hours of community-based, experiential, or clinical training in an underserved area
    • 40 hours didactic education focused on the following topics:
      • Interprofessional Education;
      • Behavioral Health Integration;
      • Social Determinants of Health;
      • Cultural Competency;
      • Practice Transformation; and
      • An emerging issue important to the local area.
  • Applicants must be able to travel independently to NEIU as well as to off-site activities.
AHEC Scholars who successfully complete the required activities will receive a $250 award in each year (max $500), and a certificate of completion at the year of the 2nd year.
Application Deadline: March 15, 2019
Applicants will be notified of their acceptance on April 1, 2019
